Delhi Earthquake: Strong Tremors Felt Across Delhi-NCR as 4.0 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes

Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) experienced strong tremors early on Monday morning as a 4.0 magnitude earthquake hit the area. The epicenter of the earthquake was located near Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education in Dhaula Kuan, south Delhi. The tremors were felt at 5:36 am, and a loud sound was heard as the earthquake struck.

The earthquake’s shallow depth of just 5 kilometers contributed to the strong shaking across the region. Many residents rushed out of their homes in panic as the tremors were felt intensely. Videos of the shaking fans and people standing outside their homes quickly went viral on social media. Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, and no emergency calls were made to the Delhi Police or Fire Service.

Dhaula Kuan, which has a lake nearby, has seen low-magnitude quakes every two to three years, including a 3.3 magnitude tremor recorded in 2015. The earthquake on Monday morning, however, felt more significant due to its shallow depth and the multiple bursts of energy from tectonic plate movements.

Political leaders also shared their concern for the safety of residents following the tremors. BJP leader Tajinder Singh Bagga and Congress leader Alka Lamba both posted about the earthquake. Delhi’s Caretaker Chief Minister Atishi offered prayers for everyone’s safety, while AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal echoed her sentiment, sharing her post on social media.

In addition, the Delhi Police reassured the public, writing on X (formerly Twitter), “We hope you all are safe, Delhi! For any emergency help, dial 112.” Authorities have asked residents to remain calm and alert for any aftershocks while they continue to monitor the situation.

Delhi-NCR is located in Seismic Zone IV, meaning the area is susceptible to moderate to strong earthquakes. Although the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.0, the tremors were felt strongly, leaving many residents shaken.
