Rahul Gandhi slams BJP, calls President’s Rule in Manipur an admission of their complete failure to govern

Following the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticized the BJP’s handling of the situation, calling it a clear admission of their failure to govern the state. In a post on X, Rahul wrote, “The imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur marks the BJP’s acknowledgement of its total inability to manage the region. PM Modi can no longer deny his direct responsibility. Will he finally visit Manipur to explain his plan to restore peace and bring normalcy?”

Congress has long been calling for the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur, citing the government’s inability to address the ongoing violence and unrest in the state. The party believes the central government only acted after the social fabric of the region was severely damaged.

On Thursday, the Union government imposed President’s Rule in Manipur, suspending the state assembly, following the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh. Singh’s resignation, which came after nearly two years of ethnic violence, led to political instability in the state.

Congress leaders have expressed that their demand for President’s Rule, which had been persistent for almost 20 months, was finally met after the crisis worsened. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh emphasized that the situation had reached a breaking point, with over 300 lives lost and 60,000 people displaced since the violence erupted on May 3, 2023.

Ramesh also criticized the BJP, pointing out that despite securing a strong majority in February 2022, the government’s policies led to a disastrous situation in just over a year. He accused Union Home Minister Amit Shah of failing to manage the state and took aim at Prime Minister Modi for not visiting Manipur to address the crisis.

The state assembly, which was elected to serve until 2027, has now been placed under suspended animation, according to a notification from the Ministry of Home Affairs. N Biren Singh resigned as chief minister on February 9, hours after a meeting with Amit Shah, prompting the governor to report the situation to President Droupadi Murmu, which ultimately led to the imposition of central rule.
