Rekha Gupta

Rekha GuptaRekha Gupta, born on 19th July 1974 in Julana, Haryana, is an Indian politician currently serving as the 9th Chief Minister of Delhi, a position she assumed on 20th February 2025. She is the fourth woman to hold this office in Delhi. A member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), she represents the Shalimar Bagh constituency as its MLA since 2025.

Before her political career as an MLA, Rekha Gupta had a strong presence in student politics, having served as the General Secretary and President of the Delhi University Students Union. Additionally, she has been an active member of the BJP’s National Executive and has held the role of General Secretary for the Delhi state unit.

Gupta hails from a Hindu family and completed her education at Daulat Ram College under Delhi University. She went on to pursue a law degree from IMIRC College of Law in Bhaina, Ghaziabad, affiliated with Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut, graduating in 2022.

Political Career

Rekha Gupta’s political journey began with her involvement in student leadership. She contested the Delhi University Students’ Union elections and emerged victorious, serving as the President of the Delhi University Students’ Union from 1996 to 1997. This early success marked the beginning of her active participation in politics.

Rekha Gupta has had a significant and impactful career in local and national politics. She served as a three-time councillor and also as the former mayor of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC). She was elected as the Delhi Councillor from Uttari Pitampura (Ward 54) in 2007 and 2012, gaining recognition for her leadership. In 2022, the BJP nominated her as the mayoral candidate for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) against AAP’s Shelly Oberoi.

Gupta holds the position of National Vice President of the BJP Mahila Morcha and has also served as the General Secretary of the BJP in Delhi. In the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, she won the Shalimar Bagh constituency by a notable margin of 29,595 votes, defeating AAP’s Bandana Kumari.

Her political journey started with her involvement in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and she was an active member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), shaping her early political beliefs.

On 19th February 2025, she was elected as the Leader of the BJP Legislative Party in Delhi. Following her election, she met with the Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena to stake her claim to form the new government in Delhi.
